Steps to build your database:

You need to give people an awesome reason to join your database.

People simply don't like signing up to receive more junk mail or junk email.

Everyone already gets enough of that.

So give them some awesome free gift in exchange for simply writing their details ona bit of paper, or signing up on your website.

The free gift is like a hook that pulls them in onto your database.

Here's some ideas on free gifts you could use as the hook to sign people up

Find or create an awesome self-help guide that can be emailed for free, or printed and mailed cheap.

There are plenty of websites online that give away free ebooks - you can email those people and ask them if you can give away their ebook to your customers.

I've done it many times, and usually they say yes, because you are helping to advertise their business to more people.

You could sponsor a competition with an awesome prize worth over $200 if possible.

And if you can get that prize donated from another business for free, you'll be laughing.

For example, if you sell products, can you ring or visit your supplier and ask if they will sponsor the competition in exchange for free advertising of their product range or venue or something to their benefit?

Usually suppliers are pretty open to that kind of thing, as long as you explain how it benefits them through increased advertising of their products.

You might give them a special permanent upgrade on the normal service if they join your database.

For example, if you sell massages, you might give all database members an extra 5 minute foot massage for free whenever they come in for any other type of massage - like a full-body, head-and-shoulders, and so on.

Basically, the rule is...

  • Think of something that is free or very-low-cost for you to provide to hundreds or thousands of people
  • make it awesome - if it were you hearing about it, would you get excited?
  • make it easy to deliver - no point in making life hard for yourself. For example, online ebooks can be emailed to a new subscriber with a few clicks of a mouse.
  • don't offer discounts on your products or service as your free gift - you are giving money away when you should be receiving it. Think of something else.
