I have never really made millions directly from the free newspaper articles or radio plugs. Millions of people don't suddenly come screaming out of the hills at you, waving fists of cash and having desparate blood-shot eyes because they desparately need your product after reading about it in the paper. I found that the newspaper and radio coverage of my business produced a small (but still awesome) stream of customers... ...but it's main value was in the building awareness of my business in public, ...and the incredible boost to my business reputation, which made it so much easier to convert customers to sales later on. I used their quotes and comments in my marketing material to show people what the media think about my business. This helped build my reputation and credibility, which made sales easier, increasing my profits.
So the main sales and profits came from the follow-up promotions using the media articles and quotes as recommendation to try my business. This was very effective.
